If there’s a big reason why shorts of this time period are scarcely seen today, aside from the politically incorrect jokes, it is that they feel extremely dated. Throughout these shorts, it’s easy to spot a pattern relying heavily on physical gags and music. While the cartoons of this period didn’t necessarily rely on a set formula, each one remained extremely similar in style and humor. With no other major cartoon stars under the Disney banner, he received the sole spotlight and became an unparalleled icon. : Disc 2 - Shorts, From the Vault, Bonus Features, and Closing Thoughtsĭuring the late 1920s and early 1930s, Mickey Mouse was at the peak of his popularity. : Video and Audio, Disc 1 - Shorts and Bonus Features Two single-sided, dual-layered discs (DVD-9) Suggested Retail Price: $32.99 Subtitles: English Closed Captioned / DVD Release Date: December 7, 2004 Running Time: 334 Minutes (5 hours, 34 minutes) / Rating: Not Ratedĭisc One: 170 minutes (150 - shorts, 2 - introductions, 18 - extras)ġ.33:1 Fullscreen (Original Ratio) / Dolby Digital Mono (English) Walt never forgot that his fortunes were all started by a mouse, or that simplicity of message and lots of hard work always pay off.Disc 1: (Click title to view that portion of the review)ġ929: The Barn Dance, The Opry House, When the Cat's Away, The Barnyard Battle, The Plowboy, Mickey's Choo-Choo, The Jazz Fool, Jungle Rhythm, Wild Waves ġ930: Just Mickey, The Barnyard Concert, The Cactus Kid, The Shindig, The Picnic ġ931: Traffic Troubles, The Castaway, Fishin' Around, The Beach Party, Barnyard Broadcast 1932: The Mad Dog, Barnyard Olympicsīonus Material: Mickey Mania: Collecting Mickey Merchandise, Mickey's Portrait Artistĭisc 2: (Click title to view that portion of the review)ġ932: Musical Farmer, Trader Mickey, The Wayward Canary 1933: Mickey's Pal Pluto, Mickey's Mechanical Man, 1934: Playful Pluto, Mickey's Steam-Roller, Mickey Plays Papa ġ929: The Haunted House 1931: The Moose Hunt, The Delivery Boy ġ932: The Grocery Boy, Mickey in Arabia, Mickey's Good Deed ġ933: Mickey's Mellerdrammer, The Steeplechase 1934: Shanghaied īonus Material: Galleries, Mickey's Sunday Funnies Against a blizzard of doomsayers, Walt persevered and over the next decades delighted children of all ages with the adventures of Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi & Peter Pan. All this was in preparation for Walt's grandest dream - feature length animated films. Mickey's feisty, naughty behavior had captured millions of fans, but he was soon to be joined by other animated companions: temperamental Donald Duck, intellectually-challenged Goofy and energetic Pluto. The SILLY SYMPHONIES soon appeared, and Walt's growing crew of marvelously talented animators were quickly conquering new territory with full color, illusions of depth and radical advancements in personality development, an arena in which Walt's genius was unbeatable. The happy arrival of sound technology made Mickey's screen debut, STEAMBOAT WILLIE (1928), a tremendous audience success with its use of synchronized music. When a mildly successful series with Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was snatched away by the distributor, the character of Mickey Mouse sprung into Walt's imagination, ensuring Disney's immortality. Business reversals sent Disney & Iwerks to Hollywood in 1923, where Walt's older brother Roy became his lifelong business manager & counselor. Always the innovator, his ALICE IN CARTOONLAND series broke ground in placing a live figure in a cartoon universe. As a lad in Marceline, Missouri, he sketched farm animals on scraps of paper later, as an ambulance driver in France during the First World War, he drew figures on the sides of his vehicle. Walt Disney (1901-1966) was always intrigued by drawings. Horace Horsecollar plays the Kid's faithful steed Walt Disney provides Mickey's squeaky voice. The South of the Border soundtrack propels the action right along. Although Disney used this basic plot formula many times, this little black & white film is still fun to watch. Mickey Mouse - THE CACTUS KID - must try to save cantina hostess Minnie from the foul clutches of bandito Peg-leg Pete.
